Estimates, not construction documents

Everything on Drywall Planner is provided for general information and preliminary planning. The quantities and costs produced by our calculators are estimates based on common industry rules of thumb applied to the dimensions you enter. They are not a material takeoff, a bid, a specification, or engineering advice, and they should not be used as the sole basis for ordering material or entering a contract.

What the calculators assume

The results depend on assumptions that may not match your job. In particular, the calculators assume:

  • Rectangular or L-shaped rooms with flat, plumb walls of a single height.
  • Standard opening sizes: 21 sq ft per door, 15 sq ft per window and 112 sq ft per garage door.
  • A waste allowance of 10% unless you change it, which may be too low for complex layouts.
  • Framing at standard spacing, and standard sheet dimensions sold in North America.
  • Published rules of thumb for compound, tape and fastener quantities, which vary by product and by installer.

Soffits, chases, bulkheads, stairwells, arches, curved walls, cathedral ceilings and partial-height partitions are not modelled. Jobs with those features need a measured takeoff.

Prices are your inputs, not our quotes

Any cost figure the site produces is your own price per sheet and your own labor rate multiplied by an estimated quantity. Material prices, labor rates and delivery charges vary continuously by region, supplier and season. The ranges quoted in our articles are general US market context as of the date of publication and are not offers, quotations or price guarantees.

Codes, permits and safety

Building requirements are local and they change. Board thickness, fire rated assemblies, moisture resistant board in wet areas, ceiling spans and any structural work are governed by your local building code and may require a permit and inspection. Nothing on this site overrides code, a manufacturer’s installation instructions, or the direction of a licensed professional.

Drywall work involves heavy panels, overhead lifting, power tools and silica dust. Older buildings may contain asbestos or lead. Use appropriate protection, and have suspect materials tested before you disturb them.

Always confirm before you buy

Before placing an order, confirm your quantities with your supplier’s takeoff desk, and confirm labor with the contractor doing the work. Suppliers know local sheet availability, delivery minimums and current pricing, none of which this site can see.
