Counts follow the screw spacing in IRC Table R702.3.5 with the sheet hung across the framing and screws into every member. Per-pound counts are Grip-Rite's; other brands and retailer boxes vary, so buy a few extra.
Drywall screws per sheet
| Sheet | Wall, 16 in o.c. | Wall, 24 in o.c. | Ceiling, 16 in o.c. | Ceiling, 24 in o.c. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x 8 ft | 28 | 25 | 35 | 25 |
| 4 x 10 ft | 32 | 30 | 40 | 30 |
| 4 x 12 ft | 40 | 35 | 50 | 35 |
How many drywall screws per pound and per box
| Length | Per lb | 1 lb box | 5 lb box | 25 lb bucket |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-1/4 in | 258 | 258 | 1,290 | 6,450 |
| 1-5/8 in | 200 | 200 | 1,000 | 5,000 |
| 2 in | 175 | 175 | 875 | 4,375 |
Counts are Grip-Rite's published quantities for its 1, 5 and 25 lb packages. Other brands, and some retail listings of the same box, show a little fewer, so treat them as approximate.
A 4x8 sheet of drywall hung across studs 16 in on center takes 28 screws on a wall and 35 on a ceiling. That follows directly from the fastening rules: the sheet lands on seven studs, and the IRC and the Gypsum Association call for screws at most 16 in apart along each stud on walls and 12 in apart on ceilings, kept 3/8 in in from the edges. A 4x12 sheet takes 40 on a wall and 50 on a ceiling. The calculator draws the pattern and turns your sheet count into pounds and boxes.
Drywall screw spacing
- Ceilings: screws no more than 12 in apart along each joist or truss, at 16 or 24 in framing.
- Walls framed 16 in on center: no more than 16 in apart.
- Walls framed 24 in on center: no more than 12 in apart.
- At least 3/8 in from the edges and ends of the sheet.
- Under a garage ceiling below living space, 5/8 in type X takes fasteners every 6 in.
The first three come from 2024 IRC Table R702.3.5, which matches the Gypsum Association's GA-216 and USG's installation guide. The edge distance is from GA-216 and USG. Screws must penetrate wood framing at least 5/8 in, which is why the minimum screw is 1-1/8 in for 1/2 in board and 1-1/4 in for 5/8 in board; USG recommends 1-1/4 in Type W screws for both.
How many drywall screws in a 5 lb box
About 1,290 of the common #6 x 1-1/4 in coarse-thread screw, by Grip-Rite's count of 258 per pound. A 5 lb box of 1-5/8 in screws holds about 1,000, and of 2 in screws about 875. Retail listings of the same boxes sometimes show a little fewer, so buy one more box than the arithmetic says.
Can you use fewer screws?
Not fewer than the code spacing. Screws spaced further apart let the board pull away from the framing, which shows up later as popped fasteners and cracked joints. Adhesive between the board and the framing can reduce fasteners in some assemblies, but follow the board maker's and adhesive maker's instructions for the exact pattern, and never on fire-rated assemblies unless the listing allows it.
