Weights are the manufacturer's published lb per sq ft, approximate for design and shipping. Payload includes everyone and everything else in the vehicle, so leave a margin.

A 4x8 sheet of standard 1/2 in drywall weighs about 51 lb, a sheet of 5/8 in type X about 70 lb, and a lightweight 1/2 in panel about 40 lb, by USG's published weights per square foot. Multiply by the sheet area for bigger sheets: a 4x12 sheet of 5/8 in type X is over 100 lb. The calculator does the arithmetic for the board you are buying and tells you how many trips your truck will take.

How much a sheet of drywall weighs

  • 1/4 in: about 1.2 lb per sq ft, 38 lb for a 4x8.
  • 3/8 in: about 1.4 lb per sq ft, 45 lb for a 4x8.
  • 1/2 in lightweight: about 1.25 lb per sq ft, 40 lb for a 4x8.
  • 1/2 in regular: about 1.6 lb per sq ft, 51 lb for a 4x8.
  • 5/8 in lightweight type X: about 1.8 lb per sq ft, 58 lb for a 4x8.
  • 5/8 in type X: about 2.2 lb per sq ft, 70 lb for a 4x8 and 106 lb for a 4x12.

USG describes these weights as approximate, for design and shipping purposes. The 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 in regular figures come from an older USG submittal, since regular 1/2 in board has largely been replaced by lightweight panels.

Bundles and loads

USG and Georgia-Pacific both ship board two panels to a bundle, taped face to face, so a bundle of 4x8 regular 1/2 in board is about 102 lb, a two-person carry. How many sheets make up a supplier's lift varies, and no manufacturer publishes a figure, so ask your supplier if a delivery has to fit a floor or a driveway. For a pickup, check the payload on the door jamb sticker: it includes passengers and anything else in the bed, so leave a margin.
